Google May 2026 Core Update

Date: May 21 - June 2, 2026

Google's second core update of 2026 rolled out over roughly 12 days and caused significant volatility - noticeably more impactful than the March update. If you saw unexpected ranking shifts in late May, this may have likely been the cause.

AI Performance Reports in Search Console

Date: June 3, 2026

Google launched dedicated AI performance reports in Search Console, giving site owners a separate view of how their pages appear inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. Data includes impressions broken down by page, country, and device - but no clicks yet. There's also a new toggle to opt your site out of appearing in AI features entirely (enforcement of that setting starts June 17).

Currently rolling out to a subset of UK websites before a wider global rollout.

Google Search Agents

Date: May 19, 2026

At Google I/O, Google announced "Search agents" - background agents that monitor topics around the clock and send updates with links when new relevant information appears. It will launch first for Google AI Pro & Ultra subscribers this summer. Still early, but worth paying attention to as another signal of where search is heading.

ChatGPT Referral Traffic Up 59% in May

According to Ahrefs data, ChatGPT was the only major search/AI platform to grow referral traffic in May - up 59.4% - while Google, Bing, Perplexity, and Gemini all declined. Still a small slice overall, but the direction is worth tracking.
